Cafés of Perth

Over the past few decades, Australia has increasingly embraced Asian culture – not least its culinary methods and delights. One manifestation of this is the growing number of Asian influenced and fusion cafés and restaurants all over Perth. Here are three of the best.

Little Matcha Girl, Como WA

Matcha, finely ground powder of specially grown green tea, is a staple in Japan. Add it to almost any drink or piece of confectionary and it brings a new meaning to ‘bitter- sweet’ – and one that you won’t easily forget. No other place can do iced soy matcha lattes or matcha chocolate opera cakes quite like this place. Its exquisite products are matched by the décor: pristine white walls, wooden accents, origami ceiling pieces and cherry blossoms. To find another place like this one would require booking a ticket to Osaka.

Shark Bites Toast, Victoria Park WA

We don’t hear a lot about Taiwan, but this fusion restaurant/café gives us a taste of it. They have a menu filled with tasty bao buns and burgers. If you’re not hungry, you can have a home- made bubble tea or a fairy floss smoothie that is almost too pretty to drink. Shark Bites Toast is a family friendly place with a colourful, contemporary Asian fusion feel.

Tbsp, Bayswater WA

On the outside, Tbsp is fairly unassuming, but it doesn’t take long to notice the queues and the undoubtedly happy peo- ple inside. It is worth the wait for brunch, especially for those who are up for a sat- isfying savoury meal. Incorporating Asian flavours and ingredients that are gaining popularity in Australia, such as pandan, black sesame, miso, Sriracha and more, Tbsp has been embraced both by people of all backgrounds and personal tastes.
