Creating this issue of The Pinoy Strayan has been no walk in the park. It has taken very long nights. It has meant time given up which would otherwise have been devoted to people near and dear to one’s heart. On occasion, the question has popped up as to whether the whole exercise is of any real consequence. One sometimes wonders if the self-imposed mission of delivering a community magazine to foster belongingness and unity in the target community itself can be by any measure accomplished; and if theefforts and resources poured into the endeavour will make any significant impact at all and do justice to the generosity of business sponsors. Doubts do tend to inhabit the shadows of the long nights.
But then, encouragement happens. A ‘kababayan’ from Cockburn community weighs in. Fr Nelson requests for additional copies to give to inquirers. Rosy says she learnt a lot from the pages of the last issue. And time spent with Isa and Amil, listening to their lyrical story, is priceless.
There is more movement now in the community bulletin section, and we are hoping that more clubs would come on board as contributors, so that in the seasons ahead there might be more coordination, conversation, and collaboration.
It is also fulfilling to recollect the historical significance of the Bataan death march and the landing at Gallipoli. It is equally exciting to invite people to the new City Library, introduce Whang-od and Eliza, and reflect on the lesson of the amazing soldanelle.
The shadows of the night do disappear in the light of day.
So when all is said and done, bringing to you the first quarter 2016 issue of The Pinoy Strayan has been very gratifying. Happy reading!
