Monthly Filipino Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral
On the 14th of November, Fr Jeffey Casabuena celebrated the first Filipino (Tagalog) Mass for Perth Catholics at St Mary’s Cathedral. Some 500 Filipinos gathered for the historic occasion.
It was the first of what will become a regular monthly Holy Mass to be celebrated in the Filipino language for the benefit of Catholics across the Perth archdiocese.
The holding of a monthly Mass for Filipinos is a recognition of the growing number of Filipinos who populate the Catholic churches on Sundays and serve in various church ministries throughout the Archdiocese.
In previous years, a Mass for Filipinos used to be held monthly at St Brigid’s Church in Northbridge, organised by Damayang Filipino. The Damayang Filipino monthly Mass is now held
on the fourth Sunday of every month at 3pm, officiated by available Filipino clergy, at Notre Dame Parish Church in Cloverdale WA. Mass is followed by a shared meal with newly-arrived Filipino migrants and their families.
According to Fr Jeffey, the Filipino Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral will be held every second Saturday of the month at 4:00pm, and will be an anticipated Sunday Mass.
Fr Jeffey Casabuena is a newly-ordained priest of the Archdiocese and is serving as one of the assistant parish priests at St Mary’s Cathedral.
Members of the Filipino Catholic community are appreciative of the welcome that St Mary’s Cathedral has given through the installation of the monthly Filipino mass.
