Cafés of Perth

The Bodhi Tree

For many people, sitting in a coffee shop and reading is one of life’s true pleasures. There is no better place to do just that than at this bookshop café. Conveniently positioned on the corner of Oxford St and Scarborough Beach Rd, it is a place you could find yourself sitting for hours and taking a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. The cafe serves healthy organic snacks that are sure to fulfil a variety of tastes and dietary requirements. And for those who do not run on caffeine, the blend-your-own fresh juice is available for hydration and enjoyment. The Bodhi Tree is quaint, colourful and warm all year round. Impressing both locals and visitors alike, there is simply everything to like about it.

Chu Bakery

Chu Bakery has attracted a lot of attention – certainly the good kind – since its opening early this year. The lack of space and table seating makes it more of a pit stop than a destination for catchups, but it as definitely become a favourite for much needed ‘coffee runs’ on both weekdays and weekends. While in there, your eyes will feast on the signature pastries, including the classic strawberry tart (with a delightful cookie crust!) and a special range of croissants (the kaya coconut being a must-try). If you weren’t already convinced, the best part of the Chu experience is that its treats can be enjoyed while sitting on the grass and enjoying nature in Hyde Park just across the road.

The Beaufort Street Merchant

When I first walked into ‘the Merchant’ three years ago, my first thought was that the place clearly had an identity crisis: it was all at once a brunch place, a fancy restaurant with an informal open kitchen, a busy café and a bottleshop. Dozens of visits later, I can definitely say it is a crisis that I don’t want solved. In the eternally hip area of Mt Lawley, it gives Perthians a taste of the hybridity that channels the trendiest Melbourne meeting spots. The savoury sharing boards are wonderful, but so are the macaroons and cakes with afternoon tea. To prove that the place can absolutely do no wrong, the dim lighting makes for the perfect ambience any time of day. The Beaufort Street Merchant truly has what it takes to become an institution in the West Coast.
